Buying and Selling Antiques |
Buying and selling antiques is becoming a very popular hobby and business for many people, thanks in part to the many traveling antique shows feature on television. There are many different types of antiques that you can buy and sell. Quite often certain types of antiques are more popular than other antiques. If you are planning on buying and selling antiques you need to understand the market and how to make it work for you.
The best way to establish yourself is to find the most unique item that you can. It or they should be fairly easy for you to acquire. The next step is to learn everything you can about it.
Currently items from the New England states, and dated from between 1790 and 1860, are becoming popular collector's items. They are heavily influenced by their Anglo roots. Some examples are: hutch tables, highboys, blanket chests, and pewter cupboards. If you can get your hands on any of these, you will be successful when it comes to selling them. Of course you quite possibly will find them so gorgeous, that you end up keeping some for yourself.
On a completely different note, antiques from the West, particularly Texas, are becoming highly sought after. Much of the home items found in Texas during the 1870s to 1900 reflected the German heritage of many of the Texas pioneers. Items such as wardrobes and tables, even rawhide chairs, are highly prized by collectors. Texas antiques are easy to identify by their use of native Texas woods, such as heart pine. The dovetailing on drawers can also be a telling feature of Texas antiques. Look for items where the dovetailing looks hand rendered, not the uniformity and perfection of machined dovetails. Antiques with dovetails will appear rough, hand made, and slightly irregular.
If you are just starting out with your antique collection and want to start up a business of buying and selling you will have to obtain items such as the ones mentioned above so that you can establish your uniqueness in the antique field. You want to be able to offer antique buyers something that they can’t get anywhere else without a great deal of effort.
